STORMS OF THE MARTIAL WORLD SESSION EIGHT: SLAUGHTER AT JADE TEMPLE

This was the eight session of a new Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate campaign. See the SEVENTH SESSION LOG to read about the previous session.

Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate is our wuxia RPG. It is available HERE in PDF. It should be out in print in about a month.

Characters
Peng Ke-Yen: Eccentric daughter of a merchant who goes against conventions and is notable for her white and black streaked hair. From Dashen village.

Peng Pei: Daughter of two low Yen-Li priests. Also from Dashen village.

Zhendao: A former slave of a man named Zhao.

Shin Du: A performer and actor who is a perfect shot with the bow.

Song Pei: A one-armed physician.

The party went to Jade Temple in Li Fan, where they had been told a massive piece of jade was being kept. They were hoping to use it to defeat the Plum Tree Monk and help save Sister Fox. However, they were sent by Chao, a chief of Glorious Death Cult, who only gave them the location if they swore to slaughter everyone present, except slaves.

During the journey they debated what to do. Song Pei was opposed to slaughter and wanted to get around the oath by converting all the temple nuns to slaves. Zhendao did not understand this approach and wanted to do as they had promised. Ke-Yen's only concern was her loyalty to Brother Wold and Sister Fox.

When they reached the mound where the temple was built, they crossed a field, and saw a tall old man, in jet black robes, eating from a box and laying out painting supplies. He looked to them as they approached.

They asked who he was and he explained he was Supreme Master Tung, leader of the Glorious Death Cult, here to observe the slaughter. After a brief exchange of words they went to the front entrance of the temple.

They knocked and spoke with a nun, then asked if they could speak with the head abbess. During the conversation, Song Pei explained that he wanted to avert an impending slaughter, and that Supreme Master Tung stood waiting in the fields.

"Then I will stand here to defend against him if he is after the jade," She said.

Song Pei tried to explain further but as he did, Zhendao leapt through the door and into the hall. The Abbess tried to stop him, and explained, with the help of Song Pei, that they could talk first.

When they went inside, they heard a chanting that shook their bodies to the core and drained their health slowly.

As this was going on, Ke-Yen finger flicked a stone at Supreme Master Tung and said "There will be no slaughter today!".

He arose, said "Then you will all die," and walked away slowly.

Inside the party gathered in a reception hall. The woman told them her name was Hao Min and she was the new abbess. They told her they were here for the jade.

She explained that her predecessor had shown her a report, which she had a copy of and handed to then. Soon after the report was made her predecessor vanished. She told them that the nuns of the Jade Temple were under the authority of the Temple of Jade Mercies and that it was their duty to chant to crack a massive deposit of Jade kept in their main shrine.

The report read as follows:

50th Report From Abbess Xiruo to Abbot of the Jade Mercies
….and so I believe the tales are true that tell us the Dutiful Empress, goddess of Meidu, was killed by a deceitful servant. I also believe, this jade that we have been destroying slowly over time, is her body, or at least what remains of her physical Phoenix form. The Life Keeping Stone, the one we believe Brother Wolf possesses, this is clearly her Dragon Spirit. Perhaps if they are combined she can be restored…

I also have a strange guess about the identity of this Plum Tree Monk. His obsession with the Life Keeping Stone, his weakness in the presence of the Jade, I suspect he may be the Red General, the Dutiful Empress’s protector and lover. But he’s gone mad and forgotten who he is…..

They discussed the meaning. The woman explained that the jade was the corporeal shell, the phoenix spirit of the Dutiful Empress. She believed that if the Life-Keeping Stone was re-united with it, she could be restored. Ke-Yen explained they needed the Jade to fend off the Plum Tree Monk, and that the Life-Keeping Stone was keeping Sister Fox alive.

"But you have been misinformed" she said. "The jade won't harm the Plum Tree Monk, it can only harm him if the Life-Keeping Stone is placed inside it. And even then it will most likely just restore his mind. He is the Red General. He merely forgot his past."

Ke-Yen objected that this was all speculation on the part of her predecessor Abbess Xiruo. She acknowledge it was, but believed it was true.

As the chanting continued to harm them, the abbess decided to help. Song-Pei had begun to meditate and she placed two fingers on his forehead, which began to glow. Ke-Yen interpreted this as an attack and leapt to her friend's defense. She and the Abbess exchanged blows, but the Abbess sent her to the ground with a devastating punch, knocking her out.

She then resumed placing her fingers on Song-Pei's forehead, which transmitted a new Kung Fu technique directly to him. When she was done, he knew the Jade Wind Technique. This would enable him to resist the effect of the chanting.

However, Zhendao had left in the confusion and went into the shrine. Against the wall was an enormous, egg-shaped piece of jade. It took up an entire wall. Before it he found 20 nuns lost in a meditative chant. He slit all their throats, finding it odd that none resisted. They bleed to death and he went over to touch the jade. As he did so, a powerful sense of sorrow and guilt overwhelmed him. He sat on the ground and began to meditate.

The abbess heard the sudden silence and went into the shrine. There she quietly gathered the bodies of her nuns and prepared them for burial, saying nothing to Zhendao.

In the aftermath, it was clear Zhendao had some remorse, and the abbess told him he would have to save ten lives for every life he took to undo the evil of the slaughter. Zhendao vowed to protect the jade at all costs. She explained that she also believed the jade needed to be protected, but that Smiling Abbot was due for another inspection soon.

They discussed their options. She convinced them of the importance of restoring the Life-Keeping Stone, but Ke-Yen would only do that if she could find a way to stop the life ebbing venom. The abbess scolded her saying that Sister Fox should die, that extending her life with the life-keeping stone required regular human sacrifices and went against her fate.

However, she said if there was a cure to life ebbing venom (and she didn't think there was) the best place to look was the Tomb of the Red General, as that is where it was located in the first place.

They talked and she agreed to lie to Smiling Abbot, telling him that the Glorious Death Cult had attacked them for the jade. That would buy her and the party some time.

She told them that the tomb of the Red General was in Northern Hai'an near mount Hai'an. They should go there swiftly.

They left and took a boat to Hai'an. They traveled to Crocodile Village, where a kind woman gave them shelter and food in exchange for Song Pei teaching the Classics to her sons. During the lessons, he cleverly learned the location of the Tomb of the Red General from them. He also learned that the tomb's initial trap was a spinning room.

In the village, Zhendao spotted a steamed bun vendor and went over. The vendor handed him a bun and asked if he had anything to report. He said nothing, that he was not a Raksha anymore.

The vendor withdrew his steamed bun and provided an alternative steamed bun "I suggest you eat this then".

Zhendao said he would not do so, and insisted that he vendor eat the bun himself. He ate it and began to convulse.

Zhendao dragged the man and the cart to the woods, then returned.

They went to the tomb. They approached the main entrance, and examined the door. When they opened it, they threw something inside, and sure enough he room spun around with tremendous torque. They did it a few more times, then jammed it open and made their way inside.

This is where the session ended.

DHAMMA AND HAI'AN
Min and Ong Lao went back to the Inn of the Emerald Monk and asked Mr. Tao if there were any heroes or priests in the establishment. He pointed them to a table where a heavyset nun was eating bowls of noodles. Ong approached and asked if he could join her. She said yes, then suggested he should offer to buy her some noodles, then she would speak with him. He ordered her some noodle bowls and she ate about four before looking at him and telling him her name was Wu Gaolin.

Ong explained that they were dealing with a swordswoman in Dhamma who was possibly the ghost of Lady White Blade. They were not sure if she was really a ghost or not and wanted to recruit a hero who knew about these matters.

She said she could accompany them to deal with the swordswoman, and claimed she had a technique that could reveal whether it was indeed a ghost. She asked if he had any battle plan in mind. Ong said they hadn't, and she suggested they face her head on, surrounding her from all sides.

They purchased some food for the road and went toward the vale where they had encountered the ghostly swordswoman. As soon as they saw her, Min used Rain of Arrows twice and the swordswoman collapsed to the ground. They determined she was not a ghost, just a woman dressed to appear as a ghost. They captured her and Min ventured into Lady White Blade's tomb. There she took time and recorded two techniques written on her body. Then she burned the body and they left the vale as it filled with dark, thick smoke.

They headed  to Paw, a small rice farming village in Dhamma. There Ong spoke again with P'Dee who gave him two sacks of rice and told him to return to the village anytime he passed by. Ong gave one sack to Gaolin and they walked with her to her temple.

On the road she explained that she belonged to Purple Lotus Temple, that they believed in mercy, but only to a reasonable point. From what Min and Ong could gather, her beliefs seemed like a Yen-Li interpretation of Hen-Shi. On their way to the temple, as they passed through the hills of the Demon Moon Lands in Hai'an, they were accosted by eleven disciples of Twin-Fisted Eagle Sect.

The disciples strutted around and eyeballed the party. One of them said "You are aware of the toll, aren't you?"

Ong asked what the toll was, and the man replied "For you? Fifty Silver Taels."

Ong said the amount was outrageous.

"Then I'll just have to take your arms as payment," Said the man.

The three of them fought the disciples. It was a lengthy battle and eventually Wu Gaolin fell to their palm strikes. Min and Ong knocked out the remaining disciples and were able to heal Gaolin before she died. They tied up the Twin-Fisted Eagle Disciples, creating a train of prisoners. Ong then placed Gaolin on his back and carried her to the temple.

At the temple they were greeted by the head Abbess. She gave them some manuals and put the prisoners to work in nearby mines. She offered to send one of her disciples, Xiaomin, with them on the rest of their journey, as the Demon Moon was approaching. They chose to stay at the temple for the duration of the Demon Moon and do work for the nuns.

YUN HU
Back at Stone Palace Shen Chun organized affairs at the headquarters. He debated what to do about the conflict with Southern Hill Sect and the beggars. He also made sure the work on their new fortress on Stone Forest Hill was progressing.

Jade Priestess returned to Stone Palace with Silent Dagger. They went before Shen Chun and Da Mei Mei, where Silent Dagger introduced them to his new Sifu. They spoke about the beggar problem and Jade Priestess said she might be able to arrange a meeting with their local chief. Shen Chun agreed.

Silent Dagger and Jade Priestess went out into the city. She instructed Silent Dagger to buy bowls of noodles and steamed buns. Then she had him distribute them to a group of beggars near the canal. As he did so, she announced interest in speaking with Ping Wu the regional chief of Nature Loving Monk Sect.

One of the monks said "Come back here tomorrow at dawn and you will have your meeting."

The next day, Shen Chun came with his retinue and saw a beggar with a shock of white hair and tight cap. "I am chief Ping Wu," he said "Greetings sect leader!"

Shen Chun explained he wanted an end to their conflict, that his quarrel was with Southern Hill sect, not the beggars. Ping Wu nodded and said "Very well, we can easily end this bloodshed if you apologize to us for killing our brothers."

Shen Chun bristled at this notion and they debated who was to blame. Shen Chun kept pointing out that they had killed plenty of his men at the Battle of Stonethrow Bridge and that Yellow Mantis had started the whole conflict in the first place.

"This is not what I heard," said Ping Wu. "I heard that Twin-Fisted Eagle sent an exploding statue of Hen-Shi to your sect headquarters, to trick you into fighting alongside him."

Shen Chun was refused to believe the assertion and demanded proof. Ping Wu noted that Yellow Mantis was a righteous man who would never attack his enemies using such tricks.

They debated for some time. Eventually Shen Chun offered a reluctant apology. They asked for a show of good faith from the beggars as a token. Ping Wu said they had nothing to give, for they were beggars.

Silent Dagger asked permission to negotiate and they reached an agreement: Nature Loving Monk Sect would give them access to their information network for one month. At the end of that time, they would negotiate further use of the information network.

Still angered at Ping Wu, Shen Chun, went back to Stone Palace with his men and they discussed their next move. Soon after a beggar arrived and asked to speak with the chief.

He came into the reception hall and told Shen Chun that they learned the daughters of White-Haired Crocodile were in Eastgate, seeking revenge against Stone Palace for the death of their father.

Shen Chun gathered his men and sent Devil-Faced Toad and Silent Dagger ahead of them to the city. Silent Dagger and Devil-Faced toad asked around when they reached Eastgate and were told by beggars that he daughters had been seen at the Celestial Pavilion.

They went to the Celestial Pavilion and found them at a table. Devil-Faced Toad got a table, while Silent Dagger walked over to them. He bowed and asked for a moment of their time. One of the daughters looked up and said he was not worthy of their attention, then went back to eating. Silent Dagger reprimanded them for being rude and it escalated to a fight quickly. One of the daughters stood up and they squared off, but Silent Dagger bested her pretty quickly. As he shoved her toward the wall, the other sister leapt up and unleashed a tornado of kicks upon him. He countered her attacks. Eventually he knew he had them both beat, and the eldest sister stopped fighting.

"Out of my way, we're leaving" she said.

"Not so fast," said Silent Dagger. "You were quite rude to me there, why don't you come with me and we'll speak about this in private." She refused and he grabbed her.

This infuriated a patron sitting nearby. He stood up and grabbed what looked like a chain whip from his belt. His eyebrows were thick and fierce.

"How dare you treat this woman in such a despicable way," said the man. "Let's see how you handle someone who is more your match."

Silent Dagger motioned for Devil-Faced Toad to take the guy. As he did so, Silent Dagger turned back to the sister and attacked her. Just as he brought her down, he felt a spray of hot liquid on his back. He turned to see the man holding Devil-Faced Toad's head in one hand, and a flying guillotine in the other.

They squared off. As they fought the Flying Guillotine nearly dropped on Silent Dagger's head twice, but each time he was able to leap against the wall to evade it. He then dropped the man with Storming Daggers and hired to patrons to help him carry the prisoners and Devil-Faced Toad's body outside.

Silent Dagger met up with Shen Chun outside the city and they headed back to Yun Hu. On the way, Silent Dagger shaved off the man's eyebrows.

Back at Stone Palace they interrogated the man. He said his name was Guo Kang and that his father was Guo Yang (a renowned hero).

"Where did you get the Flying Guillotine?" Silent Dagger asked.

"The enlightened goddess gave it to me," he said.

Neither Silent Dagger nor Shen Chun believed this but they asked for more details and Guo explained that it had been given to him by the Enlightened Goddess and that she charged him with retrieving the Life-Keeping Stone. They offered to let him go if he relinquished the Flying Guillotine, but he said he was sworn to protect it.

To prevent problems, Silent Dagger stood him up and fought him one-on-one, killing him swiftly. Then they had Smiling Abbot examine the Flying Guillotine.

"This is indeed a celestial artifact," said Smiling Abbot.

This is where the session ended.

THE BANYAN
Ong and Min brought the beggar they'd defeated to an in in Jin Yu. They treated his injuries and he agreed to teach Ong his Dog Bashing Stick Technique. Showing him the basics, he struck at Ong with his stick then told Ong to do the same to one of his own men. Ong did not master the technique but expressed appreciation and showed the beggar Blade of the Dancing Fox, which he mastered using a stick instead of a sword.

The beggar told them his name was Ma Zhangfu. He asked them what they were doing in the temple and they explained Min had been looking for some techniques. With further discussion he learned she was interested in a technique called Phantom Phoenix Strike, and told her that he'd heard rumors the technique was written upon the body of Lady White Blade.

Min asked where her body was and he said he didn't know, but that she had been killed by a group of heroes in the south. They had apparently overwhelmed and beheaded her but left the body behind.

Min and Ong thanks Ma Zhangfu and decide to go south in search of Lady White Blade's body. It took considerable time as they had to go south into Dhamma. In Dhamma they came upon a small village and spoke with the headman, P'Dee who told them that he'd heard rumors of a ghost in the nearby hills who killed passerby with a phantom sword strike. They asked for more information and he told them generally where the location was.

The next day they set out and when they reached a small gully filled with craggy rocks a woman appeared upon a rising stone, dressed in white. Her skin was pale and she has a bleeding slash wound across her neck. "So you've come to steal my techniques," she said. "Go back so that you can live."

Ong tried to reason with her but she flew at him in a charging sword strike, slicing him badly and forcing him to use blasting Qi strikes to keep her at bay. In the confusion, Min ran passed her and came upon a tomb entrance. Inside she found the mummified remains of a woman's body. The head and torso were separated and a technique was writing upon her skin. Not wanting to take the body, Min retreated and rejoined Ong.

They fled, but the ghostly woman chased them through the hills for nearly a day. They fled north and finally reached the Emerald Inn in safety.

LI FAN
At Stone Palace Sect, Shen Chun met with Weeping Lotus, Accountant Feng and other leaders of his sect. They discussed the situation with Southern Hill Sect.

"Now that Yellow Mantis and his wife are dead," Said Weeping Lotus, "We should treat this as having 300 individual enemies seeking revenge, rather than one group acting as a whole. I suggest we increase our security and take no chances. We should also actively seek out and kill any Southern Hill sect Disciples we find."

Shen Chun agreed and told him to make arrangements. He then said he planned to go meet with Da Mei Mei at the Relentless Corpse Caverns. He told Weeping Lotus to bring fifty men and escort him.

In the main hall, Little Bai was at his table, awaiting recruits for his "Heroic Sect". A short man, with a hat and pudgy features came, and said his name was Filial Cricket.

"Good, you want to join my sect, then answer me this; what is the color of the sun reflecting on water?"

"Red," replied Filial Cricket.

"Good, you are in. Go upstairs and find a room, you are my second chief, I will give you more information soon."

Filial Cricket bowed three times and thanked Little Bai and was escorted to a room.

Soon after that a woman arrived, a tall woman with a powerful build. She said her name was Mount Dao, and she wanted to join.

"Okay, well I just learned that the color of light on water is red, so tell me what is the meaning of red?"

"Life?" said Mount Dao.

"No," said Little Bai, "The answer is the meaning of red is to strive endlessly."

Mount Dao protested, "But that is ridiculous, you made that answer up."

They argued for some time. And Little Bai asked her why she wanted to join. She said she fought with her hands, but wanted to learn how to use a sword.

"Okay, let me try your Kung Fu," said Little Bai and got into a stance. They started to exchange blows. It was a somewhat even match at first, with her delivering some solid arm strikes. But she was also cut by Little Bai's sword.

Little Bai ended the fight once he had a sense of her skills and said "Alright, tell me the answer to this question, "Why does a stone feel the way it does?"

"Because it is dead" she replied.

"Okay, you can join. Go take a room and I will bring you information later on. You are my second chief."

Soon after that, a middle aged man dressed in red came. He said his name was Red Eagle.

"So you want to join, then answer me this;" said Little Bai, "Why do birds sing at night?"

Red Eagle gave this considerable thought, and finally he said "Because they are lonely."

Little Bai approved of this answer and instructed Red Eagle to take a room as well, telling him he was third chief of the heroic sect. Red Eagle bowed, thanked him and called Little Bai Sifu.

Little Bai then went to Scholar Shen and asked him to make three copies of his Nine Intercepting Sword Manual for the new disciples. Scholar Shen did so.

Shen Chun spoke with Little Bai and told him they were leaving in the morning to see Da Mai Mai. He also gathered people like Dim-Witted Chen for the journey. He decided to leave Weeping Lotus to oversee the sect headquarters in their absence.

The next day Little Bai presented his disciples with the Nine Intercepting Sword Manual and three swords. "Read this text and master it before I return", he said "I am going away for a few days. Do you have any questions?"

"Sifu," said Mount Dao, "I would like to accompany you on the journey."

Little Bai agreed and they set out.

On the journey, Little Bai taught Mount Dao Eyes of the Formless Interception, which she mastered. This moved her, as she didn't expect to learn a crucial technique so quickly and that night she appeared before him, kowtowing in apology.
Da Mei Mei

"I have betrayed you Sifu," she said. "I was sent here by Brother Wolf to take the Life-Keeping Stone. But you were kind to me, taught me your Kung Fu, and cannot go through with is."

"Deception is the worst thing of all," said Little Bai. "I hate deceitful people. But you have come clean and didn't betray me in the end. I still have to punish you, though."

"Yes Sifu, I will accept any punishment for my actions."

"You are no longer second chief of the sect," said Little Bai.

Mount Dai thanked him for his mercy. She then explained that her real name was Biggest Sister, and 'Mount Dao' was just a cover name. She also told him the reason she did what Brother Wolf commanded was because he had her three brothers captive and had threatened to kill them.

"This is outrageous," Said Little Bai. "We will go immediately to find your three brothers when we return to Stone Palace."

They eventually reached Relentless Corpse Sect headquarters. There Da Mei Mei greeted them. And once again it was clear that she had undergone some minor transformations mastering new Kung Fu techniques. She graciously accepted the Life-Keeping Stone and said she intended to wear it, then seek a way to absorb it into herself. She also agreed to keep her promise and marry Shen Chun.

They discussed a date for the wedding. Shen Chun asked, since it was coming soon, whether the Demon Moon would be appropriate.

"The Demon Moon is an unlucky time for humanity," She said. "Do you still feel human?"

They discussed things further, both agreeing that their past actions, made them less human than before, and that it might be good fortune for them to marry on the first day of the Demon Moon.

She asked about accommodations and Shen Chun explained they were working on a new fortress complex in Li Fan. In the mean time they would stay in Stone Palace.

She agreed, told him they would combine their sects and she would grant him use of her Corpse King Venom if he wanted.

They set out to return to Stone Palace Sect. On the way, the got lost*, then they managed to walk through an ambush site wear bandits lied in wait. Though they could sense the presence of the bandits, they were never attacked and it seemed their numbers and sect banners deterred them.

However they were not so lucky the next day when they came upon a line of thirty men blocking their path. The men shouted they wanted revenge for yellow mantis. Shen Chen stepped forward, noting that there were groups of fifty to sixty men on either side of them in the hills as well. Between Stone Palace and Relentless Corpse sect, they had about 150 men on their side, so this made them roughly equal in numbers.

"We don't have to fight. I don't want to endlessly slaughter one another," said Shen Chun.

A man stepped from the line and shouted "Blood for blood!"

With that an arrows was sent from the hills to strike Shen Chun. He used Deflecting Canopy to evade the attack. Little Bai climbed through the air to the man who fired the arrow shouting "Don't attack my friends!" and stabbed the attacker to death.

A mass battle ensued as the forces converged on them. Shen Chun instructed Dim-Witted Chen to blast the men in front and he succeeded in throwing them back with Blast of the Dragon. Da Mei Mei threw out her arms and a dark orb of energy ascended from her body into the sky. It rained tendrils upon the men on the hills, sucking the life from 50 of them in an instant.

With a huge boost to morale, Stone Palace and Relentless Corpse Sect slaughtered the remaining Southern Hill Disciples. In the end they killed them all, and lost only 25 of their own men.

When they returned to Stone Palace, Little Bai spoke again to his disciples. He gave them three precepts to follow:

  1. Take every opportunity to be heroic!
  2. Do not tolerate bad or deceitful people!
  3. Always sleep well and eat until you're full, you need that energy to fight!

Red Eagle stepped forward and said, "Sifu, I think I can help here, I own a restaurant in Gaoxing called Red Eagle Wine Shop. I can feed our sect endlessly if you need."

"Great," said Little Bai, "Let's go there immediately! Accountant Feng, tell Shen Chun I am at the Green Eagle Wine Shop if he needs me."

This is where the session ended.

*Their guides kept failing multiple Survival Rolls.
