This chapter includes new Kung Fu Techniques, Profound Techniques and Rituals. Many of the NPCs in the prior chapters have access to these techniques (quite a few are the originators of them). All other techniques are described in the WHOG rulebook.
NEW KUNG FU TECHNIQUES
ABATING PALM
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Endurance TN 7
Type: Normal
Qi: 6
You place your palm on a person suffering an affliction and flow in your Qi energy to stave off the effects temporarily.
Make an Endurance Roll TN 7. On a success any deepening condition caused by a Kung Fu Technique, supernatural affliction, poison or disease is halted for however long you choose to maintain the technique (there is no additional cost or use required but you must keep your hand on the target and not do anything else during this time). You can extend this time by flowing your Qi into the person but this causes you to lose 1 Qi rank for every hour you extend the effect.
This must be used Cathartically to work.
This is effective against poisons, supernatural illnesses and techniques like Bone Shattering Palm. However, when used to halt the progress of a lethal technique it only works if your Qi rank equals or exceeds the Qi rank of the person who delivered it initially.
ABRUPT GRASP OF THE VINE
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Creatures (Plants) against Evade
Type: Normal
Qi: 4
You send your Qi energy into the ground, summoning up any plants in the area to grasp at the feet of your opponents and hold them down.
Make a Creatures (Plants) roll against the Evade of all targets within a 10-foot area per Neigong rank. Each affected target is considered Restrained, being able to break free by making a Muscle roll against TN 6+Neigong rank. Additionally, they take -1d10 to all Physical and Combat skills while restrained.
Cathartic: The area you can cover increases to 10 feet per Neigong rank and Qi level.
ALCHEMY OF THE CITRON
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Trade (Alchemy) TN6
Type: Normal
Qi: 2
This technique was developed by Timeless Perennial, who took a great interest in alchemy and the usages of plants, but still cared for those plants’ well-being. She devised a set of practices that could achieve greater alchemic success while simultaneously appeasing the spirits of living ingredients. It involves many rules, including that you must delicately handle your ingredients, meticulously prepare them, and carry out the steps of your alchemic recipe to the letter.
You flow your Qi energy into your brew as you work, giving you a much greater chance of success. You receive a +1d10 bonus to your next Trade (Alchemy) or Talent (Poisons) roll if it is made in the next hour. You also treat your ingredients with care, making sure to brew with plants without offending their spirits.
Cathartic: The bonus becomes +2d10.
ARRAY OF THE MOONFLOWER
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Creatures (Plants) against Attack Roll
Type: Counter
Qi: 6
This devastating counter was developed by White Chrysanthemum specifically to combat Blazing Rays of the Sun. You use your Qi energy to form a, expanding spherical barrier, which redirects all of the rays coming at you up into the sky.
Make a Creatures (Plants) roll against your target’s Attack Roll. On a Success, you take no damage, and all of the plants in the nearby area wither and die as they lose their life force. You also cause the attacker's life energy to flow uncontrollably from them, draining 1 point of Hardiness per Neigong rank you possess. This will only stop the normal version of the technique.
This technique only works against Blazing Rays of the Sun.
Cathartic: In addition to the above, the Cathartic version of the technique can be countered. Also, even more of your target’s life force is caught in the great upward surge, and they begin to lose themselves, causing them to be drained of 3 Qi levels. Additionally, they must make a Meditation roll against your Wits, or immediately lose Qi Levels equal your Neigong rank. These recover at a rate of 1 per hour.
BARK OF THE BAOBAB
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Meditation against Parry
Type: Normal
Qi: 5
You harden your own internal energy to the point where your skin becomes like the bark of a tree, then slam yourself into your opponent with full force.
This technique requires that you meditate for at least 1 round before attacking, though you can choose to meditate for longer. While meditating, your skin becomes as hard as the bark of a tree, allowing you to ignore the first Wound you take each round. When you finally attack, you make a reckless charge at your opponent. You deal damage equal to Muscle plus 3 Extra Wounds per round spent meditating, but take -2 to Evade and Parry for the next round after doing so.
Cathartic: The final damage increases to Muscle plus 5 Extra Wounds per round spent meditating.
BLADE OF GRASS
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Light Melee TN7
Type: Normal
Qi: 1
This technique was developed by Timeless Perennial, who believed in the power of plants to overcome other weaponry. You call upon plant life within reach, infusing it with your Qi energy and fashioning something offensively viable.
By taking any small nearby plant, you can improvise a Light Melee-based weapon. It is non-lethal and deals damage equal to your Speed ranks+Neigong ranks. Its natural flexibility also allows you to subtract your Neigong ranks from your target’s Parry.
Cathartic: The technique inflicts 1 Extra Wound for every 2 Qi Ranks you possess.
BLAZING RAYS OF THE SUN
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Survival (Wilderness) against Evade
Type: Normal
Qi: 6
This technique was developed by Timeless Perennial, who believed in the power of plants to overcome other weaponry. You send out your Qi energy to all of the nearby plants, borrowing their ability to make energy from the sun into a single, all-out attack.
This technique can only be performed in sunlight. Make a Survival (Wilderness) roll against your target’s Evade. On a Success, all of the plants in the nearby area concentrate their sun energy and radiate a blinding beam that burns your target alive, doing 6d10 Fire Damage plus 3 Extra Wounds.
Cathartic: The damage increases to 6d10 Open Fire Damage plus 6 Extra Wounds.
BONE SHATTERING PALM
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Arm Strike against Parry
Type: Normal
Qi: 6
You strike a foe with your palm causing a ripple of tiny fissures through their bones that spreads and kills with time.
Make an Arm Strike Roll Against Parry. On a success the person takes 5d10 Open Damage and loses 1 point of Hardiness.
Cathartic: The target takes 6d10 Open Damage. Also each day roll 3d10 Against Hardiness, on a Success, the target loses 1 Point of Hardiness. This continues each day until the process is reversed by special means (only a Qi rank 7 or greater healing technique or some other extraordinary ability, such as the touch of a god, will cure the person). The lost Hardiness does not return until a cure is found.
BONE RATTLING FINGER
Discipline: Dianxue
Skill: Arm Strike against Parry
Type: Normal
Qi: 5
You tap the target’s rib with the tip of your finger, causing a wave of quaking to rattle their entire body.
Make an Arm Strike against Parry. On a Success the target begins to shake, suffering a 1d10 Penalty to all physical and combat skills (and any skill requiring fine motor abilities) for 1 round per rank of Dianxue.
Cathartic: The target suffers -2d10 penalty to the above skills and takes one wound from the shaking for 2 rounds per rank of Dianxue.
BURNING VERMILLION SWORD
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Meditation Roll then any Bladed Melee
Type: Normal
Qi: 4
Your rage flows like molten energy into your blade and strikes the source of your ire with burning ferocity.
Make a Meditation roll against TN 6 as a Move. On a Success your blade glows red and does 2 Extra wounds on any successful attack for 1 Round plus 1 per rank of Neigong. If you strike a target that has recently caused you genuine anger, then it does 4 Extra Wounds instead of 2. On a Total Success the duration is doubled. On a Failure the energy pours back into your body, inflicting 2 Wounds.
Attempting to use this technique in conjunction with another Neigong technique (for example a similar technique that infuses your blade with energy) is incredibly dangerous. When attempting to do so, you must make a Meditation TN 8 roll. If you fail, you are at the center of a 5d10 damage blast of energy that affects a 10 foot radius (because you are at the center, you take 5d10 Open Damage).
Cathartic: As above except on a Success the blade does 3 Extra wounds. Against the source of your anger it does 5 Extra wounds.
CLASP OF THE MANTIS
Discipline: Waijia
Skill: Grapple against Parry
Type: Normal
Qi: 4
You pinch a target’s torso between the fingers of both hands, clutching like the pincers of a mantis.
Make a Grapple roll against Parry. On a success the target is restrained and takes 1 automatic wound.
Cathartic: The Target is restrained and takes 3 Automatic Wounds.
CLUTCHING KICK
Discipline: Waijia
Skill: Leg Strike against Attack Roll
Type: Counter
Qi: 5
As an opponent attacks, you spin and hook your leg around their neck, flipping them into the air and landing on them with your knees when they strike the ground.
Make a Leg Strike Roll against the attack roll of any melee attack. On a success you avoid the attack and flip the target into the air as you leap into the air yourself, doing 3d10 falling damage to the target.
Cathartic: In addition to the above effect you can make a second leg Strike Roll to land on them with your knees. If you succeed you do normal damage plus 3 Extra wounds.
CRACK OF THE BONE FLUTE
Discipline: Neigong

Make a Light Melee Skill roll against Parry. On a Success the target takes 4d10 plus 2 Extra wounds.
Cathartic: On a Success the target takes 4d10 plus 6 Extra wounds. In addition, the area you struck continues to throb for 1 day per rank of Neigong and explodes in pain anytime you play Cultivating on a Winding Stream. To play the song, make a Talent (Flute) roll TN 7. If you succeed the victim suffers wracking pain that imposes -1d10 Penalty to skill rolls.
CRASH OF THE METEOR HAMMER
Discipline: Waijia
Skill: Heavy Melee against Parry
Type: Normal
Qi: 6
You swing your meteor hammer in a wide arc, striking your foe with thundering force.
Make a Heavy Melee roll against a single target. On a Success this does open damage. On a Total Success this knocks the target back 10 feet per rank of Waijia instead of the normal 5.
Cathartic: On a Cathartic use you hit with such force you can plow through the first target and strike up to 1 additional Target per rank of Waijia.
CRIPPLING STRIKE OF BING
Discipline: Dianxue
Skill: Arm Strike against Parry, then Medicine roll TN 7
Type: Normal
Qi: 6
You send a small pulse of energy that severs several key meridians, putting an end to the victim’s Kung Fu.
Make an Arm Strike against Parry. On a success, make a Medicine Roll TN 7. If this succeeds the target loses all ability to perform Kung Fu. Only powerful supernatural means can restore them.
This must be done cathartically and you must be twice the Qi rank of the target for this to work. When you attempt this technique, you immediately gain Imbalance points equal to your target's Qi level (in addition to the usual Imbalance costs). This extra Imbalance point cost is not prevented on a Total Success.
DEFLECTING BALL
Discipline: Waijia
Skill: Heavy Melee against Attack
Type: Counter
Qi: 4
You strike any incoming ranged or melee attack with your meteor hammer, giant mace or twin maces; using tremendous heft to send the attack back.

This must be used cathartically.

You take the flower on the end of The Chrysanthemum Blade and pour in a poison or infect it with a disease. The next time you strike someone with it, it deals 3d10 damage. If it inflicts any wounds, then the Target is afflicted with that poison or disease.

Make an Arm Strike roll against Parry. On a success the target is filled with a desire to do one thing that you impart to them. This can be anything from killing a particular person to building a vast temple complex. It cannot be a command to commit suicide as you cannot override their natural desire to live. This lasts until the task is completed and each day the person doesn’t work toward it, they must make a Resolve Test or suffer 5d10 Open Damage as their meridians swell with volatile Qi energy.
This does not work on anyone whose Qi ranks exceed your own.

Skill: Meditation TN10
Type: Normal
Qi: 13
This technique can only be performed through great effort and self-reflection. It reveals things about oneself that were previously unclear, and cleanses the mind of worldly impurities.
This technique must be performed in a grassy field with flowers. You sit in meditation for several days, manipulating your Qi energy through meridian points in your body. Unlike many cultivation techniques, this also requires you to cycle your energy out into the environment around you, then take it back in. This not only purifies it, but solidifies nature as a part of your life.
If you are able to achieve a cycle of flowing Qi energy between yourself and nature, then you become an Immortal. However, it also imprints you with an order which can never be broken: you must protect nature and plant life.
GOLDEN SONG
Skill: Talent (Singing) against Resolve
Type: Normal
Qi: 7
You sing a gentle melody that captivates listeners and compels them to do your will.
You must sing a song and direct your attention to up to 2 targets (they need to feel like you are singing to them). Make a Talent (Singing) roll against Resolve. On a Success they are entirely under your command and do your bidding absolutely. On a Total Success you strike a chord deep in their being that can never be broken. Even after the effects of the song fade, the person will feel a sense of good will toward you (giving you a +1d10 bonus to all Command, Persuade and Deception Rolls against them).
This effect lasts for twenty minutes. It does not work on higher Qi rank characters.
JADE RIBBON BURST
Skill: Arm Strike against Evade
Type: Normal
Qi: 9
You raise your arms and blue ribbons of energy lash out at targets all around you.
Make an Arm Strike Roll against up to 12 targets in your immediate area. On a Success they take 3d10 Open Damage plus 6 Extra wounds.
LILY OF THE POISONED MIND
Skill: Medicine TN9
Type: Normal
Qi: 7
This healing technique draws out deadly afflictions from targets and should be used with a handful of lilies.
You pour your Qi energy into your patient, directing it through them to collect all of their afflictions, including poison, disease, and deadly Kung Fu Techniques. You then remove the energy with the poisons, transferring those to the lilies before restoring your own internal balance. This causes the flowers to turn a sickly color, and depending on the affliction, likely wither and die.
If you use flowers other than lilies, then roll 1d10. On a 5 or lower, you take all of the afflictions your patient had, as the flowers cannot fully contain them. If you use no flowers at all, you take all of the afflictions your patient had, no roll.
SCREAM OF THE PHOENIX
Skill: Command against Evade
Type: Normal
Qi: 10
You unleash a powerful scream that lifts people off the ground and hurls them violently against nearby objects.
Make a Command Roll against the Evade of all targets in a 500-foot cone before you. On a Success the target is lifted into the air and hurled anywhere you desire. You may inflict 7d10 Open Damage through this attack. On a Total Success the person is knocked out upon landing (and still takes 7d10 Open Damage).
SPEARING FLUTE
Skill: Talent Flute against Evade
Type: Normal
Qi: 8
You play your flute, creating a narrow and invisible force of energy in the shape of a spear. It then flies through the air to and fro, impaling each target around you in turn.
Make a Talent (Flute) Skill roll against the Evade of everyone in a 300 foot area. On a Success anyone affected takes 4 automatic wounds. On a Total Success everyone affected takes 6 Automatic Wounds.
SWARMING FLOWERS
Skill: Meditation against Evade
Type: Normal
Qi: 7
A swirl of sharp chrysanthemum flower heads form around your enemies and slice their flesh.
Make a Meditation roll against the Evade of your targets (everyone in a 100 foot area per rank of Qi). On a Success, you forgo damage and all take 3 Automatic wounds.
NEW RITUALS
Blood Fire Ritual (TN 7)
This ritual can be performed quickly but requires that you rapidly cut and suck your own blood, losing 1 Hardiness. You then sit in a meditative posture and spew forth the blood with becomes a ring of flame that encircles and burns anyone in a 100-foot area for 2 rounds. Anyone caught in the fire must make an Athletics TN 7 roll or take 3d10 Fire Damage each round (no counters are allowed for this). This also allows you to levitate and float quickly (double your normal Move) for 2 rounds.
Blood Invincibility Ritual (TN 8)
You perform prayers over a Yen-Li altar, slicing your hand and dripping your blood into a vessel. Then you perform Talent (Calligraphy) TN 7 to draw the character for a particular type of weapon on a person’s back or chest (for example: Sword, Staff, etc). You can place up to two such characters on a person at once. Performing this ritual takes an hour for each character and the effects last for six hours. However, each character you render depletes you of 2 Hardiness due to blood loss (and the blood must come from the Ritual Master Performing the Ritual). This does not work on Divine Powder weapons.
While under the effect of this ritual, the target is entirely immune to the weapon rendered on their body.
Create Paper Talisman of Jiangshi Control (TN 7)
You render characters and symbols on a slip of yellow paper, then stamp it on the head of a Jiangshi (Arm Strike against Parry). So long as the paper remains, the Jiangshi cannot move. If the maker of the talisman rings a bell, the Jiangshi moves and follows his or her command. It takes 20 minutes to make the talisman and requires a Ritual TN 7 roll.
Demon Force Ritual (TN 9)
This ritual requires that you have a demon trapped in a vessel. Place the vessel upon the ground before a Yen-Li altar and beseech the Five Ghosts to help you draw out the demon’s life energy. On a Success, the Five Ghosts enter your body in turn and each extract up to 7 Wounds, causing a visible flow of energy from the vessel to your body. You can then pour this energy into a weapon of your choosing. Anyone struck by that weapon takes 2 Extra Wounds. However the amount of uses is finite. The weapon can only cause a number of Extra Wounds equal to the amount of wounds drained from the demon. So, a sword imbued with 14 wounds can do 2 Extra wounds for 7 attacks.
Forceful Opening Ritual (TN 8)
With this ritual, the user can force open any existing gateway to another realm. However, use of this ritual is quite dangerous to the uncultivated. This requires the use of ritual bells and the ritual master stand firm and use a ritual sword to wrest power from local door gods, spirits and guardians. Make a Ritual Roll against TN 8, followed by a Medium Melee skill roll for the sword TN 6. If the ritual is successful you send forth a wave of energy from your sword causing the gateway to open for one hour and preventing any door gods or guardians from acting against you during that time. However, the door gods resent such attempts and retaliate. Any Caster below 8 Qi ranks who performs this ritual ages 3d10 years. On a Failure, in addition to the usual afflictions, the user ages 6d10 years and the door god or guardian can act.
Phoenix Essence Ritual (TN 7)
This requires the blood of a young virgin female. The blood is consumed in a ritual vessel. Each performance of the ritual increases the Phoenix Energy inside the body of the casters (this can be performed by up to six men at a time). The effect is permanent. With each increase, the caster can master another Phoenix Essence Technique. Every increase in Phoenix Energy causes those affected by the ritual to become more feminine.
Ritual of Spirit (TN 9)
To perform this you must render a tattoo on the target with dye fashioned from the Red Mists of Dee. Then you must make a Ritual Roll TN 9 offering blood to A’zhu (a human life). On a Success the person acquires the Fated Flaw and one Demon Flaw , plus experiences two benefits. The first is the target is no longer affected by the Red Mist of Dee. The second is they can handle the orbs from the Pavilion of Mind without being harmed.
Ritual of A’zhu (TN 8)
This Ritual helps maintain order in Dee by sating the Goddess A’zhu. It also gives special abilities to the casters. To perform this ritual, victims must be sacrificed at the Temple of A’zhu. The blood of the victims must be drunk by all the Ritual Masters participating. On a Success, the city is quiet for another month and the the casters can +1 Max Wound, +1 to Defenses and 2 Extra Wounds on all Successful melee attacks for three days.
