CITY OF DEE SESSION TWO: THE DEVOURER OF DEMONIC RED ELEPHANTS

Last week Red Mantis and Flying Dagger arrived in Dee and explored the city. It was a place ruled by crime lords and powerful, but less than honorable, martial sects. They ended up at the headquarters of the Four Iron Kings seeking to ally themselves with worthy heroes. Their position was secured when Red Mantis boasted to Iron King Yao Yun that he was the great devourer of demonic wasps and they put on a display of their kung fu. It was unclear if the Iron King Believed him but was truly impressed with their abilities and made them his Iron Champions, giving them a residence in the north of the city and 15 men, including a sub chief named Iron Hero Meng. He then explained that they were warring with a group called the firestick gang, who had recently taken one of their granaries. He wanted them to get the granary back and make fire stick pay for their transgression.

What unfolded was a truly astounding sequence of events, involving the explosion and collapse of the Red Mist Inn (the Fire Stick unofficial headquarters), the beheading of one of the Fire Stick Bao Chiefs and utter chaos in the Kushen district. Flying Dagger even rescued a kindly merchant from Naqan named Khaldun. But these events are not the focus of this session log.

When the party returned to their district they noticed a deep, cherry red fog, filling their western bao (a kind of ward). They had noticed this before but ignored it so they could focus on their fight with the Firestick Gang. They were concerned but first reported to Iron King Yao Yun and presented the head of the bao chief they had killed.

He was much pleased and rewarded Flying Dagger with fifty silver taels for his exceptional efforts (he was responsible for the collapse of the Red Mists Inn). He also rewarded Iron Hero Meng (who beheaded the bao chief).

They went and investigated the fog. It enclosed the entire bao, including one of their granaries. At the edge they saw people screaming and found several dead bodies, each with deep puncture wounds. Occasionally they would find someone with a crushed leg.

First they sent in a chicken. It was unaffected by the mist, but startled by something inside. Red Mantis told his men to roast the chicken for later.

Flying Dagger then explored the mist. They were too heavy and obscured his vision. But he found a couple hiding in their home. They claimed an angry god was killing people in the streets. Through the ruby mists he heard a powerful, horn-like wail.

Upon hearing the sound, Red Mantis announced that it sounded like an incredibly big demonic elephant.

Flying Dagger returned to Red Mantis. They left the men outside and went in together.

As they stumbled through the mists, they saw a massive shape charging toward them. It was an thirty foot tall elephant with rose-colored flesh and two curled, black tusks. As it breathed, the creature exhaled plumes of red mists.

Flying Dagger leapt onto a roof and tore open a fire stick, preparing to throw the divine powder at the elephant as it passed. Red Mantis stood in the center of the road and awaited its inevitable charge.

The giant red elephant thundered forward and Red Mantis leapt into an alley way. Flying Dagger dusted the beast in Divine Powder while Red Mantis lit a firestick and threw it at the elephant, causing it to ignite.

The elephant twisted and flew into the air, shaping itself into woman with flaming red hair and a golden cudgel. She landed near Flying Dagger swinging her cudgel but missing. Flying Dagger used Weapon Stride to clammer along the cudgel and strike her with his dagger (which slid uselessly along her skin).

Flying Dagger drifted to the street and the woman followed bringing her cudgel down upon them both. Flying Dagger tried to use turn of the Zhen Bird but her attack looped back around and cracked his chest with the power of a charging elephant causing him to stagger back. Her attack missed Red Mantis.

Red Mantis used Grasp of the Mantis to dig his fingers into her sides and restrain her (making it easier for Flying Dagger to strike her with his coming attack).

Flying Dagger dove in with Biting Blade and sunk his dagger deep into her chest.

Furious, the woman transformed into a massive elephant once again. Red Mantis found himself latched onto the back of the giant red elephant.

The elephant reared and tried to stomp Flying Dagger. As the mighty foot came crashing down, he leapt onto her leg and stumbled up to turn her into Red Mantis' arms so he could twist her in a counter.

Red Mantis climbed up further and used Clasp of the Mantis on her neck, digging his fingers into her like pincers.

Flying Dagger used Biting Blade once again and his dagger found its target. Blood began to spill into the streets.

The elephant once again shifted into the shape of a woman and swing at both of them with her golden cudgel. Her attack struck Flying Dagger in the chest, sending him back with a smash.

Red Mantis used Hand Conquers Heaven, Foot Conquers Earth to counter bring the mighty elephant crashing down to the street. He swept her to the ground.

As she tried to get up, Red Mantis burned her with two fire sticks and she burst into flames screaming. Flying Dagger stabbed her with his dagger. She screamed again, and exposed into a vermillion spray, which Red Mantis breathed in. All the red mist absorbed into single point forming a swirling vortex vortex leaving a rattling golden cudgel with red swirls along its surface. Red Mantis attempted to grip it, but it burned his skin so he put it down.

They summoned their Iron Heroes as a crowd formed around them. Iron Hero Leng grabbed some tongs from a nearby smith and picked up the cudgel for Red Mantis.

Red Mantis told him to have it placed in a box to bring to Iron King Yao Yun. They went back to Flying Mantis Manor (their residence in the city).

As they returned the Bao Chief arrived and bowed before Red Mantis. He thanked Red Mantis for defeating the demonic elephant and presented him with evidence that he believed was the cause of the creature's arrival. Pulling out crushed glass wrapped in cloth, he said people witnessed a man throw a glass sphere into the ground moments before the mists arose.

Red Mantis took the shards and thanked the Bao Chief who returns to his bao. Examining the shards he noticed residual red powder still clinging to the glass.

They recuperated for the night but Red Mantis gathered the men while Flying Dagger slept off his wounds. They raised their cups and drank into early morning.

In the morning, Red Mantis awoke to the sound of a gong and one his men saying "One of the Iron Kings is asking to see you."

Red Mantis summoned the men, told them to form a disciplined line and waited for the Iron King.

The man who entered was Iron King Yao Kang, who was large and slightly overweight.

Iron King Yao Kang inspected each of Red Mantis' men, sniffing as he passed.

"Have your men been drinking?" He asked.

"Yes." he said then delivered a full report on their recent activities. He highlighted the destruction of the inn and their conquest of the red elephant. He then showed Yao Kang the shattered glass and the cudgel.

Yao Kang examined the glass. "What is your name again?"

"Red Mantis"

"Oddly coincidental that you destroyed an inn and then killed a giant demonic elephant. An awful lot of heroics for two days. How do I know you didn't this yourself as a deception?"

"Have you heard of the House of Paper Shadows?"

"Yes I've heard you destroyed the House of Paper Shadows as well."

Red Mantis then explained how they defeated the House of Paper Shadows.

"Naturally I am suspicious and will have to investigate this matter," said Yao Kang. "Nice to meet you." Then he left.

Worried that Yao Kang was going to undermine them, they went immediately to Iron King Yao Yun and presented the cudgel. They also informed them of their heroics against the elephant and promised to investigate the cause of its appearance.

Yao Yun was very pleased and told them to remain for food and wine. He brought out a large object hidden beneath a cloth and heard more details about the elephant. When it was over he unveiled the cloth, revealing a guzheng.

"This is the Guzheng of Ni Chang, who played it so beautifully that Supreme Judge Yu shed a tear. I give it to you as a gift."

Red Mantis thanked him but confessed he didn't know how to play.

"I will send Lady Ji Luan to play it for you," he said.

He escorted them out and introduced them to Lady Ji Luan. They were somewhat suspicious of her so asked her questions about her background. They learned she was from Xuanlu and dedicated entirely her craft.

They returned to the residence and Red Mantis had the guzheng placed the courtyard. Flying Dagger hired men to make a pavilion for it in the garden.

Red Mantis asked Lady Ji to compose a song about about a wasp devouring mantis who defeated a demonic elephant. She took a moment and played a song she called Red Dreams of the Lucid Mantis which moved him greatly.

After this they followed a lead to the Temple of A'zhu and went to the Pavilion of Spirit. There they found a chamber filled with orbs radiating deep red.

They spoke with the priest in charge of the pavilion, telling him about the elephant. He said that it sounded like Lady Xiang, the daughter of Lord Demon Horn, who they had contained in an orb. She was stolen a few days ago.

They learned that the man suspected it was stolen by a guest of the temple, sent by vermillion sword sect, named Dim-Witted Chen. They offered to return the cudgel to the temple and he allowed them to go to the temple of Mind to ask a question. They also vowed to track down Dim-Witted Chen.

In the temple of Mind they saw heads suspended from the ceiling. Another priest was in charge and told them they could ask any of the heads, all men and women from key moments in history, a question.

Red Mantis spotted the head of Killer Wu, a demonic looking creature and asked "Is there someone who can teach me to devour demons?"

"The Devouring Queen of Lebdek" he said.

This is where the session ended.

YUN HU
Shen Chun reached Yun Hu and went to speak with Da Mei Mei. On his way, he noticed that the skies in the far north were a deep crimson red.

As he traveled through the city he saw posters addressing the martial world with an image of Kang (leader of Bone Breaking Sect) on them. They read:
As the chief of the martial world, I have decided to improve and fund the tournament Stone Palace desired to hold. They did an admirable job, but this is a very special occasion, as I will personally be competing myself. The competition will be held on the same day but at the Embroidered Platform in Daolu, where Sunan himself competed against the deplorable Iron Awl Hu. The master of the venue has offered much coveted Chariot of Mao Mei as a prize to the victor the Golden Elimination Rounds. Those who perform admirably in the Golden Elimination Rounds will be given an opportunity to challenge me in a drinking contest, and to the victor of this match will go the Phoenix Crown of Bao and the Wind Sabre of Sunan. Whoever wins these can be the new Chief of the Martial World. Afterall, I have led you through these glorious times, but I long to return to Infinite Sky Realm and should like to find a worthy successor.
Stone Palace Sect had been organizing a tournament they planned to host and challenged Kang to attend  This was clearly a ploy on his part to undermine their efforts.

Shen Chun continued on to Stone Palace Headquarters. When he spoke with Da Mei Mei she informed him that she was pregnant. He then informed her about the death of Silent Dagger and other developments in Dee.

Shen Chun requested Corpse Venom so he could use it on some of the sect leaders in Dee. Da Mei Mei expressed concern and decided to give him three doses. She was worried about the unknowns. After the conversation, Shen Chun sent a message to Bronze Master about the tournament.

After speaking with Da Mei Mei, Shen Chun went to the Gambling Hall in Yun Hu. He asked for updates from Weeping Lotus and inquired if there was anything the sect could do for him. Weeping Lotus was content and said he believed their recruitment efforts would increase (something they had trouble with in the past due to their bad reputation).

During the discussion Shen Chun learned that Weeping Lotus' family had been killed many years ago.

He then went to Accountant Feng and spoke with him. Shen Chun offered to hire a matchmaker to help him find a wife.

After tending to sect matters he travelled back to Dee and became making preparations with Murder to poison the Iron Kings.

THE SOUTH

Granny Ox Tail came out in the morning and told Ong he looked like a Sun Mai Monk, that he should shave his hair and grow a beard. She then asked "who is Gushan?"

He told her that Gushan was the hair cut from the Enlightened Goddess.

"This is not the correct answer answer," She said. Then she began instructing him in her Hand of the Ox Tail technique. First she explained that her Kung Fu was extremely unorthodox and posed great risk to the user. Once Ong accepted this risk, she vowed to refrain from eating human flesh during his training.

Ong mastered Hand of the Ox Tail. He thrust out his arms and blade-like ridges formed along his forearms.

Satisfied, Granny Ox Tail took him to the cliffs near her cave and they walked for some time. Then she pointed across the valley to a neighboring peak that spiraled high into the clouds.

"That is Mount Mei," She said. "Beneath the peak is a city. I want you to kill the queen and torture the king, then make way for my arrival as the new ruler."

Ong nodded and asked some clarifying questions. She explained that the easiest way to reach the city was across the Batong Bridge. But she warned him to bring food, as the bridge would waste him away if he didn't eat constantly while crossing.

Ong then found his companions and they went to the City of the Spiral Crown by crossing the Batong Bridge. It was lined with statues of massive bellies with open mouths. They are as they crossed but still felt depleted and weak by the time they reached the other side (several miles away). Approaching the city they saw fields of snake bean and indigo groves. The city itself rested before a lake, with many spiral capped domes and beyond it was a the rising peak. However despite its height, the area was humid and hot. They came upon a market where dyes and colorful fabrics were being sold. It appeared to be something of a trade hub.

Conversation proved difficult as the people didn't speak. So they had to communicate with people by writing in Singh. Eventually they found the Majestic Inn and were given rooms. Jagged Dagger gambled with the locals and won the equivalent of three hundred spades.

They spoke with the proprietor, a tall woman named Chomkwan who was able to speak. Ong asked why the people didn't speak and she told him that they had their tongues removed as children.

"Why do they do that?" Min asked.

"Words can be evil, this way they do not speak any evil."

They also asked about the queen and were told her name was Queen Su Qian.

"How do the people feel under her reign?"

"She stays out of our affairs for the most part."

"I have some information and would like to speak with her."

"You can seek an audience by going to the palace."

Ong rested as he was still feeling tired after crossing Batong Bridge. Qui, Min and Jagged Blade considered what items in the market would be worth stealing. They considered taking bolts of purple fabric, but decided the value wasn't high enough.

This is where the session ended.

The party was discussing what to do inside the Golden Hall when someone banged the gong outside their door.

Shen Chun went outside and saw a man with a mask carrying a square wooden box.

He asked the man to present himself, and he merely stood, bowing slightly.

"What is in the box?" Shen Chun asked.

The man said nothing. And motioned to his mouth, as if he could not speak.

"Get this man some writing implements," said Shen Chun.

The man wrote "This is a gift from Thundering Guan."

Shen Chun opened up the box and saw Silent Dagger's head inside.

"Do you work for Thundering Guan?" Shen Chun asked.

The man leapt forward to attack.

Shen Chun intercepted him using Fists of Unbridled fury. The man staggered backwards.

A battle unfolded and it became clear over the course of it that the man was attacking using techniques known to Silent Dagger.

Ong used his chain whip lacerating the the flesh of the man. Min leapt in with Phantom Phoenix Sword technique and impaled him, dropping his body to the ground. As she did so his mask fell off revealing headless shoulders.

Shen Chun, in a raging fury, ripped the body of Silent Dagger to shreds. Then returned to his headquarters.

As this unfolded, a man named Qui and an old guide walked by and began paying attention to the scene.

The old guide asked Min and Ong what happened.

"Our ally's beheaded body attacked us," Said Min.

The old guide turned to Qui and said "This looks like a very personal issue, I think we should leave them in peace."

"Who did this?" Qui said.

"Thundering Guan," said Ong.

"Where is this person?"

Min pointed in the direction of the Pleasure Quarter.

"Sorry about your friend," Said Qui. Then he left with his guide.

The party decided to lay Silent Dagger's body to rest. Jade Priestess informed Shen Chun that the body, being torn to shreds as it was and the product of strange Dianxue, no longer housed Silent Dagger's dragon or phoenix spirit. She was concerned he would return as a ghost, but she vowed to use black magic to get retribution against Thundering Guan.

After they settled some matters within the sect and discussed the best course of action, they headed over to The Holy Killers at The Temple of A'Zhu. They found that Qui continued to trail them. But he had a man with him who looked like a martial hero (Jagged Blade).

In the Temple, Shen Chun was given an audience the Pavilion of Mind to speak with the Right Vanguard. Inside he saw hundreds of heads suspended from the ceiling and a man approached them from a set of stairs.

Shen Chun asked to form an alliance so they could unite the gangs in the city to show Thundering Guan that she isn't as supreme as she believes.

"What would we gain if we join your alliance?"

Shen Chun tried to explain the benefits but in the end was forced to ask Right Vanguard what he wanted.

"I want you to pledge loyalty to the Holy Killers, where Thundering Guan was once supreme, we will take her place."

Shen Chun and Min were reluctant and explained that they had no intention of remaining in the city after things were settled. Shen Chun said he was merely clearing territory for a tribe he was bringing into Hai'an.

"Then it should be effortless for you to pledge your loyalties...."

Shen Chun said he could not agree to this arrangement.

"Very well, I think your time in Dee is done," said Right Vanguard. "When did you last offer a sacrifice to the temple?"

"Of what?"

"A person, for A'Zhu."

Ong said "A'Zhu can't sustain itself, it needs people to make sacrifices"

"Who are you to question A'Zhu!"

They debated religion and Right Vanguard accused Ong of worshipping a weak god. It ended with Ong leaving the Temple.

"Your friend has no manners," said Right Vanguard. "My apologies for losing my temper."

"We will provide you with a sacrifice shortly," Said Shen Chun. "What exactly is A'Zhu?"

"She is a great being who lives beneath the city," Said Right Vanguard.

"How did she get there," Asked Min.

"You are not qualified to know that," Said Right Vanguard. "Just know that without her, the city and the Demon Moonlands would become a great sinkhole and the boundaries between the realms would collapse, bringing all sorts of terrible creatures into the world."

"What do you get out of this?"

"We gain wisdom and knowledge," Said Right Vanguard. "I can tell you that A'Zhu was not always a god."

"Is there a way to harness the powers of the mists?" Asked Shen Chun.

"Yes, would you like a demonstration?"

"Yes."

Right Vanguard pointed to a nearby head and said "Please ask the Righteous Emperor any question that you wish."

Shen Chun asked a question of a historical nature from the time of the Righteous Emperor, and the head of the Righteous Emperor spoke a correct answer.

"How about this, I will not pledge loyalty, but I will not interfere with your supremacy, and I will join you against Thundering Guan," Said Shen Chun.

Right Vanguard seemed warm to this idea and Shen Chun left with tentative agreement in place.

They went to visit with Murder and discussed their plans. Murder explained that he wanted to expand by poisoning the Iron Kings (his allies) at a banquet to cement their alliance. His men would attack the Iron King's territory and take it over, then him and Shen Chun would be feared throughout the city.

Murder and Shen Chun strengthened their bond by becoming true blood brothers.

Shen Chun convinced Murder to wait for about a month, so he could go back to his headquarters in Li Fan and make some additional arrangements he wanted to procure Corpse Venom and use that to get resistant sects to do their bidding).

They continued to be followed by Qui, who pestered them. Shen Chun, grabbed a passerby in a fit of rage and twisted his arm until he died to intimidate Qui.

This persuaded Qui to be more forthcoming, who explained he was looking to hire some muscle. Shen Chun told him that they were an entire sect and it made no sense for him to hire them. However Ong and Min agreed to go with Qui for a time while Shen Chun went north to the headquarters.

Qui explained to Ong that he wanted Thundering Guan killed so he could move in on her interests. They talked about going south to recruit more heroes and work together.

It was agreed that Qui, Min and Ong would head south to recruit heroes to help them deal with Dee, while Shen Chun went north to his headquarters.

As Ong, Min, Jagged Blade and Qui went south, they made a point of looking for information on Gushan.

They travelled far into the south, passed mount Bao, following Jin Suk tribesmen. They spoke with a woman named P'Duk of the tribe who could not speak. She communicated in Singh by writing on the ground. They asked about Gushan and she pointed to Majestic Peak and wrote "Granny Ox Tail in the Vale of Golden Thoughts" on the ground.

They headed to the peak and found a nestled cave with human remains strewn about it. The cave entrance was sealed with a door that had Little Wind engravings on it*. Ong opened the door and as he did so, air expelled through the mouths of the Little Winds causing them to say "Your Sifu's shameful love".

He walked deep into the cave and down into a watery caver. High in the back of a long cave, overlooking a pond, towered a giant woman with eight spiny horns forming a crown upon her head, three eyes, four arms and a massive body.

The woman knelt.

"Why are you here?" she asked.

"I seek to learn more about Gushan. I seek to make my own temple in the north but am inadequate presently."

She said "Gushan is destruction."

"Yes, I know," he said.

"The winds have not blown through the north yet," she said.

"What are you willing to offer?"

"Myself as a vessel. I wish to represent Gushan with my Kung Fu. Let the martial world see his power through me."

"I can teach," She said.

"I am willing to learn," Said Ong.

"Sleep in the valley tonight, I will instruct you in the morning. You will do my will in the world."

Ong bowed to her and went into the valley to rest. Qui and Min decided to continue to look around for a nearby settlement. They found a small farming village with numerous stilted houses. They approached a villager who brought them to the headman's residence.

Inside they were given rice porridge which was laced with poison, causing Min and Jagged Blade to pass out. Qui remained standing as the poison blurred his vision but used Breath of Fury to hurl the headman and his wife through the wall.

Qui stepped outside pulled out a guan dao and stood over the chief. The headman put his hands up and his wife started bowing. He motioned to indicate he wanted his friends to wake up. The wife administered an antidote.

As they roused, Qui encased his Guan Dao and laid down beside them as if he too had passed out.

They demanded to know why they were drugged. Like the other Jin Suk they had met, he didn't speak but wrote his answer: "Granny Ox Tail demands food".

As they processed this information, Min pressed Qui for more about himself. She didn't believe he was poisoned, and looking at the hole in the wall suspected that he had caused it. After he evaded her questions, Qui admitted it was him and confessed that he needed help finding something to steal because he didn't have the funds to pay people. Min said she would help.

This is where the session ended.

*Little Winds are Gushan heads. They often utter prophecies and divine the future.

BONE BREAKING SECT (A COMPLETE HISTORY)

Ogre Gate Inn and Strange Land of Li Fan will be coming out soon, and one of the major sects included is Bone Breaking Sect. With that in mind I thought I would repost these links to the original campaign it came from. The game was still in development when these sessions started and there are large differences between how the sect appears here and its final inclusion in the book. But this is where it started:

Session One: http://thebedrockblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/blood-of-demon-moon-cult-session-i.html
